The Twelve Days of Detox

Today begins the 12 days of detox for Roomie, GB and I. No Cheese (well dairy of any kind, but cheese is what we really miss), no wheat, no sugar, limited caffeine and no booze.

I think it is going to be a long day one.

Wish us luck!

Let the Good Times Roll

Let me start by reassuring you all that I am fine. My trip to the hospital was a bit of a traumatic event, but now I am feeling pretty good – as long as I remember to take ibuprofen twice a day. I had a couple of calls and messages from people who were worried so I thought I would just reassure you all that TSG is still alive and kicking.

Now on with the stories …

This past weekend GB, Roomie, Awesome and I hit the town to attend a charity event that we managed to score free tickets to. The theme of the night was Sweet 70s and we all got dressed up. It was two floors of food, cheap martinis, dancing and a candy buffet. It was the fantasy everyone had as a kid, stick your hand in the jar and take as much as can fit in your pocket. We had candy sticks, rockets, tootsie rolls, pop rings, candy necklaces and coloured condoms (did I mention it was an AIDS charity event) until we just couldn’t fit anymore in our pockets. When there was no more room for candy, we hit the martini bar.

Late in the evening Awesome and I were watching the dance floor from the second level, armed with the courage of five martinis and a sugar high from all the candy I turned to him and said “you know, I really like hanging out with you and I am enjoying making out with you on occasion, but I don’t think we should have sex, again, ever.” “Umm, really? Why?” He asked, getting ready to find flaw in my argument. “Well” I began “We are really good friends, almost best friends, really. I think if we had sex, you would get weird and/or I would get weird and I am afraid that I would lose you and I don’t want that.” “Oh, yeah, you are right I would probably get weird. I do stuff like that.” And with that it was settled. So we made out for a bit to celebrate our new arrangement.

On Sunday the four of us met for Brunch, Beer and Boots. The pub was the first stop for some eggs and a crown float to start the day. Then off to the shoes store to look for some boots for the boys. I was very good and didn’t buy anything, mind you neither did the boys. After the failed shopping trip we left Awesome and GB, Roomie and I went to buy supplies for our dinner party – an Indian buffet feast. It was fantastic, 10 friends sitting around our living room enjoying lots of food, wine and good conversation. Everyone was out of the house by 10pm and the three of us did up all the dishes in under 30 minutes. Yeah team work!

It has been too long since I have had a weekend like this to report. It makes me happy to think things are getting back to normal around here. Events, parties, food, wine, martinis, boys, that, faithful readers, is how the single girl is suppose to be Keeping the Dream Alive.

Cheers Gang!

Family

Today I had to go the hospital. I wasn’t feeling well this morning and walked out the door and thought, maybe I would walk myself to the clinic as it was only a four block walk. Within 50 steps from the house I had to turn around and get someone to take me to emerge. I knocked on GB’s door and said would you take me to the hospital, I am having chest pains. He hopped right up, found the closest hospital and fastest route and we were off.

We got me checked in pretty quick and they took my blood pressure and did an ECG. GB called Roomie to let he know what was going on, and assure her I was alright. Within 40 minutes GB was aloud back to see me. Within another 20 minutes Roomie showed up. I was very pleasantly surprised. She said she couldn’t stay at work knowing I was there. In the end, after blood tests and xrays and the ECG they determined that there is nothing wrong with my heart and that I must have strained the muscle in my rib. They gave me ibuprofen and told me to take it easy.

The whole day got me to thinking about family, not just the family we are born into but also the family we cultivate over time. For some it is focused around a romantic partner and for others it is friends and roommates. All of my life I have had amazing family around me, beginning with the one I was born into and continuing with the family I have cultivated over the last twenty years or so. Today I was reminded just how great my family is, not just Roomie and GB but all of my family.

Thank you Roomie and GB for making today much less scary and way more entertaining than it would have been if I was alone. And to the rest of my extended family, thanks for being there for me and letting me be there for you.

I am a very lucky girl.

Saturday

Just a little slow this morning

The Lady is in town an last night she and I and GB and Roomie and Awesome went out for a few drinks. A few drinks turned into 4 pints and two shooters, then off to a party for wine then home for another beer each and an amaretto (yeah we really needed that).

This morning we are all moving pretty slow. I just served up Kraft Dinner to the Lady and GB and he took one bite and moaned "Oh ... this is good. "

Yeah it is one of those kind of days.

Friday

flying bullets

  • Fireboy made me an offer, if things go south with his best friend (the SSM) he would like to start a poly long distance relationship. Of course you would, I thought and left the offer on the table for another day. Turns out I am afraid of commitment, even a long distance poly commitment.
  • I told the SSM about my afternoon with Awesome - well I said I made out with a friend, but if he can't figure out who that would be, he needs his head examined. His response, lucky girl, and then he told me that he was really happy we could be honest with each other. Score one for Polyamory. Sweet!
  • Awesome and I have managed to have a normal week. Score one for making out without consequences. Super Sweet!
  • I Miss GB! Please come home, I need a pint.
  • Busy week at work. Huge gala event last night and I rocked it with a little black dress and stunning smoozing skills.
  • I got a rose, a virtual rose and a bottle of wine for VD day. Not bad for a girl who doesn't really celebrate the "holiday."
  • If OQB had a blog, I would tell you to all go there and wish him a Happy Birthday, but he doesn't, so if you want to leave your salutations here, feel free. I think he is turning 25 for the 7th time ;)

Happy Friday everyone!

Wednesday

Heard on the Phone

Upon hearing that I had a make out session with Awesome

Fireboy: TSG, you realize, at this point, the only way you could make your life more complicated would be to sleep with GB.

TSG: Yeah, that would pretty much do it. Unless I could also find a way to get OQB involved ...

I Am Not an Animal

I didn’t have a date with iDate last night. He canceled a few hours before, saying he was tired and hadn’t had a day off in a long time and was worried that he wouldn’t be good company because he felt like a bump on a log. It sort of sucked when I read the message but really, I needed to go home and pack for my business trip so I wasn’t devastated. He did tell me to call him when I get back from my trip and we will go out then … his treat since he canceled, so it isn’t all bad.

To be honest … I am sort of glad we canceled because it was so cold here yesterday that I got FROST BITE ON MY EARLOBE and wasn’t feeling all that attractive. Hopefully by next week my ear won’t hurt or look like it should be amputated. Seriously dudes - when GB looked at it and grimaced I said your look says “wow, maybe that should be amputated. Hmm, would that make it look better or worse.” “Yeah, well I do have a sharp pair of scissors in my desk drawer…” “Not cool man, not cool.” Lord knows if I did go out last night I would have shared that brief exchange and shown off my grotesque, mutated ear and scared the poor man off before he got to know my softer side. I can just see him politely telling me he has an early morning running from the pub with a slightly disturbed look on his face and me screaming “I am not an animal.”

Sometimes my inability to keep my life and thoughts to myself can get me in trouble with people I don’t know very well. That makes this blog a good outlet, I can tell all of you about the pain, redness and blister on my ear and leave the nice topics to the people I meet out in the world.

Speaking of which … I am on a business trip, time to go out and do some business.

Monday

Taking a Break

After what can only be called two weeks of lavish attention from both the SSM and Fireboy I have decided to cut them both off for about a week. I need a little break from the IMing, calls, texts, chats and such so I can step back and get a little perspective on everything. I told the SSM last night as we were chatting and he was fine with the idea and grateful that I actually said I needed a break instead of just hiding from him online for a week. I composed an email to Fireboy telling him I need a rest as well. I was kinda hoping to chat about it with talk to him, which is ironic … hi, yeah, I wanted to talk to you to tell you not to talk to me … but the email was fine and he too was very understanding.

I think this will be good for all of us. A break from everything to just think about each other (or not) and figure some things out. GB asked me how I was going to fill my days and I told him he was going to have to fill in the chatting gaps. He didn’t necessarily think that was the answer. I think I will be fine, I have a busy week including a business trip on the west coast so that will help keep me occupied.

I wonder if I will make it through the whole week? Maybe I will just blog more … does that sound good?

Sunday

An Ideal Saturday

Getting back into my life routine has it’s ups and downs but yesterday I was reintroduced to Saturdays with the roommates. We started the day by going for brunch with a friend and then to the mall for some light shopping and to the market for fresh veggies and cheese curds (mmm curds). Then off to the micro brewery for a pint to celebrate our hard work so far today and then home for dinner and a bottle of wine.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Tuesday

The Unholy Pentagon

It has come to my attention that I currently have five boyfriends – GB,OQB, Fireboy, Awesome, and the SSM. Each one of them hold a special place in my heart and my life. This might be oversimplified, but here is what each one of them bring to my life currently.

GB is my primary boyfriend (so to speak). He is my roommate and friend and we share everything from our daily minutia to our long term life plans.

OQB is my fabulous boyfriend. He and I share a party lifestyle and spend time dancing, talking about relationships and generally condemning the world to be less fabulous than we are.

Frieboy is my spiritual boyfriend. He and I spend our time together talking about how we feel and what we are trying to do with our lives and how, we can improve ourselves and our relationships.

Awesome is my bad boy boyfriend. Awesome and I spend our time talking about conspiracy theories, how the world sucks and everyone is out to get him and that there is no point in trying because it is all going to end in shit anyway.

The SSM is my ex boyfriend. He is the man who is teaching me what I want and deserve from a romantic partner.

Together they create my unholy pentagon.

Having realized this I think it is time to lose one or two of the boyfriends before a man in a red suit shows up at my door offering me a plumb job in hell.

Patterns

After meeting the Lady and spending an evening in a small town with two wonderful women talking about life, love, religion, politics, etc. Fireboy was compelled to ask me about my patterns in dating as I drove him back to the city.

He wanted to know all about my dating past and patterns. Why did I date unavailable men and what I can do to consciously change as I move forward in the dating world. Maybe all I needed to do was think about what I was doing as I began dating someone new, or maybe try a dating service where I could meet single men in their 30s that are looking for a relationship now that they have established their careers.

Now, many many many people have tried to have this conversation with me. Most end up getting an earful from me essentially saying … don’t you think I would change these patterns if I could, or why do I have to be in a couple to be happy, or the classic, Who the hell do you think you are to tell me what to do in my dating life! But, as I was driving and knew that these words were somehow connected to his wonderful time in the small town and knowing that the reunion with the SSM was a short one, that he really does just want to see me happy and the fact that he had never tried to “convert” me to the couple way of life before I let him talk and didn’t say much at all.

I have now been home for almost three days and I have managed to slide back into all my old comfortable relationship patterns. Morning coffee with Roomie, emails and lunches with Awesome, two pints with GB, walking, coffee breaks with my favourite coworkers, emails with the Lady and so on. It is nice to be able to slide right back into my usual routine at home and at work, but it does get me to thinking I will continue with the dating pattern here at home? Unavailable men, blue eyed assholes, and so on. Probably, it is what I know and am as comfortable with that pattern as I am with the rest of them. I would hate to change any of my other patterns, so this bad one might just have to stick around for a while as I settle back into life.

Shh … don’t tell Fireboy.

TSG

ps. The regular pattern also includes more regular posting, so that's good.

Tuesday

Who knew, Today is National Ex-boyfriend Day?

This morning I got an email from Awesome – pretty standard – telling me he has a present to give me before I leave town. I like presents! And we ended up emailing back and forth all morning. Around noon the SSM sent me an instant message asking how the travel plans were going – somewhat strange (like him, ha! but I digress) - and we ended up chatting for a bit. Then at the end of the day my cellphone rang and my ex boyfriend from University (Uni-ex) called - a very strange and rare event – and we also had a lovely conversation for about twenty minutes including my plans to go home.

(Side note, yes I am going home, and I will tell you all about that, but today is national ex-boyfriend day so I am focusing on that).

Anyway, Uni-ex and I chatted for a while about my life, my plans to go home, my work, his new house, his new job, blah blah blah. He asked if he could see me at some point as I would be living close to the centre of the universe. Always thinking of my readers I said “Well the SSM wants me to come to town for Fireboy’s birthday because he is going to be there, so if you come too it could be a great big ex-boyfriend party.” “Um ….” “I’m kidding Uni-ex you don’t have to come to that event. I am sure there will be other opportunities to see you while I am in the area.” “Oh, uhhh, alright.” And the conversation continued on in its friendly way.

Later, while recounting the story to GB, telling him today was national ex-boyfriend day. His response “Everyday is National Ex-boyfriend day for you TSG, think about it.” “Not really, I mean, I … now that you mention it, everyday might be a bit of an ex-boyfriend day.” There could be worse things than having exes you can continue to have a friendly relationship with.

Hee hee, Uni-ex. I can’t stop laughing at that name. He would hate to be called that.

I love it.

An Observation

I noticed recently that I have a parallel life happening here and in The Centre of the Universe. What do I mean?

In each place I have a best friend that I live with, a Gay Boyfriend and an ex-lover turned really good friend. Freaky eh? Here I have Roomie, GB and Awesome and there I have BFF, OQB and Fireboy.

I like that I can feel at home in two cities in the world.

Just an observation.

Overhead After Work

TSG: Oooh, remind me when we get to the car that I have gossip to tell.

GB: Ok?

TSG: We need to wait until we are out of the building and in a cone of silence.

GB: Is this a professional cone of silence or a sexual cone of silence?

TSG: Professional Cone of Silence.

GB: Alright.

TSG: When has my sex life ever had a cone of silence?

GB: Good Point.

Getting What I Need

I got home from work on Friday to find an email message from the SSM. After reading his generic I’m safe on the other side of the country message and a beautiful and thoughtful message from another friend I finally broke down into tears. For weeks the need to release had been building about everything so I let it all out. I climbed in the shower and wailed. When I emerged from the shower GB was there and made sure I was alright by feeding me and sitting with me and listening to me cry and yell and generally have a fit. He is a good man and a good friend.

On Saturday I spent the day wondering how I would respond to the SSM’s message, or if I would even respond at all. I figured it was best to sit on it one more day, and the roomies and the lady both agreed that was probably best. This morning I woke up and knew what I had to say. In his message he told me if I ever needed anything let him know. So I emailed him and told him that what I need right now are friends, people I can call, lean on, cry to, etc. and if he was serious about giving me what I need then he should call me. Actually pick up the phone and call.

I am somewhat amazed to report that he called the same day as I sent the email. I was in a show so my phone was off – which I think was good in a way – so he left a message. Not sure what will happen next, but I will call him back soon and we will see what happens. I don’t have any interest in re-hashing the whole break up, I am more interested in just finding out about him and telling him about me for now.

Where does that leave The Single Girl, not sure, but once I figure it out y’all will be the first to know.

Saturday

Who Knew?

Last night I forced myself to go to a work party even though I felt like I was going to vomit and looked like I was hit by a Mack truck. Roomie and GB were determined to show me a good time and at first I was not having any of it. I begrudgingly took my free beer and sat in the sunshine, sulked and spoke to no one for about 15 minutes. But, then, I was forced to get up and get my lawn bowling lesson. Yep, lawn bowling got me out of my funk. It is so much fun. It is like bocce ball and curling rolled into one. Roomie and I were on the same team and we played against GB’s team. We weren’t good but who cares we were having fun. I noticed at about 7pm that I was smiling and having a good time and I thought, well that was easy, apparently all I needed was a large activity where people can make asses of themselves.

After having our fill of free beer, food and lawn bowling our little gang headed of to the bar for some pints and dancing. GB and I hit the dance floor for a while, then Roomie and GB. At the end of the night we came home lit a fire in the back yard and mellowed out.

Today we are off to visit CMG’s new home and tomorrow a hike. GB and Roomie are so wonderful for taking care of me while I need a little hand holding. Thanks gang, I love both of you, and everyone who has called or emailed or messaged me or just sent warm thoughts. Friends (and random readers) make life’s bumpy road easier to traverse. So thanks everyone!

Overheard at a Gelato Shop

TSG: So I made a waxing appointment today and when they called to confirm they said “so that will be one Brazilian” and I said “no no no. Just a regular Bikini.” Can you believe that?

GB: You’re not getting a brazilian? You should get a brazilian. Try it.

TSG: No! Not happening

GB: Come on. Do it. Try it.

TSG: No.

GB: Come on. I really think you should do it. I will pay for half.

GB pulls 25.00 from his wallet

TSG stares at the money and GB in disbelief

GB: I went to far didn’t I? The money was too much. I should just put this money away.

TSG: That would be best.

The long weekend Part II – I Don’t Know How We Do It

After our morning beer GB and I hit the road around noon, stopping at a discount store for some cheap bathing suits so we could enjoy the hot tub at the hotel. That’s right after roughing it in the woods and the rain for one night we were on our way to a hotel to enjoy a long hot shower and a hot tub and pool before heading to a 30th birthday bash.

You may not know this about me but I am a bit of an evil genius. The party we were attending that evening was at the same complex as the work event I had to attend Friday night. When I was asked to help host our big supporter I said that I would in exchange for a room on the Sunday night instead of on the Friday night – as I had a friend I could crash with that night. Enough about my cunning, back to the story.

The drive was uneventful and we arrived at the hotel around 4pm. After a twenty minute shower and a quick check of the email GB and I settled in for an afternoon beer and a Simpsons episode. About fifteen minutes into the show I drifted off to sleep. Hey, even a hardcore party girl needs a cat nap every once in a while. An hour later I came to, a little groggy and GB let me know that it was time for the next party. As we walked to the pub I turned to GB and said “Truly I don’t know how we do it.” “Do what?” he asked. “All of this” I said as I gestured around us. “I know” he responded with a giggle. “Discipline … a lot of discipline and beer.” Then we enter to the pub for some great drinks and chats with old friends and new.

Around 11pm the pub was shutting down so we decided to move the party to a place we could all bring cocktails and drink for cheaper. We paid our tabs left the bar and wandered back to the complex. We sat around and enjoyed some more wine, music on the ipod and gentle conversation. I really thought I would be tired and toddle off to bed early, but no, the last time I looked at my watch it was 1:45am. Oy, now it is time for bed. The next morning, GB and I got up, donned out new cheapo bathing suits and had a great dip in the hot tub, where we again wondered how it is we these lives and then we packed up for the third time in three days and headed for home.

The adventure for the single girl does not end here. After arriving home, unpacking, feeding the dog and trying to nap I headed off to see the SSM for dinner. See, following the incident on Friday afternoon he messaged me and told m that he wanted to make me dinner to make up for everything. I Armed myself with a bottle of wine I headed off to his apartment not sure what to expect, or even sure what I was thinking going to his place at all. I was completely exhausted, a little hung over from the entire weekend and I’m not even sure I like him. I wonder what he will cook? Oh well, I was already half way there at that point. Too late to turn back now.

The evening was … well … really good. I had a bit of a panic attack and started to feel suffocated when I found myself back on couch with him after dinner. I quietly worked through my fears in my head and soldiered forward. I think you can fill in the blanks of where it all went once I calmed down and just enjoyed myself … At the end of our evening he wanted to cuddle and I think he was about to invite me to stay the night, but I stopped him and let him know I needed to go home. I wanted my own bed (he like many others has a bad bed), to be home for work in the morning and I needed a little space to myself. So I jumped up, called a cab and said my goodbye. As I made my way toward the door he once again planted a knee buckling kiss on me, pulled back, smiled and said, “You’d better go, or you are going to miss your cab.” “Right” I whispered as I walked out the door into the night and finally, to my home.

The Long Weekend Part I – Here Comes the Rain Again.

To continue the story of the weekend … After getting towed and attending a work event on Friday I drove back to the city Saturday afternoon, dropped off the rental car and hopped in Roomie’s car with GB to head off in to the sunset for a party in the woods.

We headed out of the city after grabbing some groceries, beer and a rental tent. It was a scenic drive with periodic rain throughout. Each time we came upon the rain I thought to myself well if it is raining here it won’t rain at the party. After three hours in the car we arrived in the middle of the woods, surrounded by water, mountains and clouds. We quickly picked a spot to set up and put up our tent hoping to beat the rain. Within seconds of getting our tent erected the rain began. We were now stuck in the woods in the rain with little more than beer, DJs, two hundred strangers and a large fire.

We made the best of the early evening by drinking beer and hanging out under the various tarps around the dance area. Around 10pm we made the executive decision to get “messy” for the evening and went back to the car to enjoy some extra curricular activities. Fill in the blank as you see fix … just know we each had our own good time.

Not long after 10 the rain dies down and the dancing picked up. We moved from the dance floor to the fire, to the car and back again. At midnight we were treated to a fire show put on by Roomie and some other women. It was beautiful and Roomie looked totally hot spinning fire.

We continued to people watch and dance by the fire until GB decided he was done for the day at around 2:30am. I stuck it out a little longer but by 4am I was ready to hit my sleeping bag. I haven’t slept in a tent since I was about 18, as such I was a bit nervous about how will I would be able to sleep. Much to my surprise when I lied down in my sleeping bag with the bass gently thumping in the background, I drifted off just as I would in my 1200 coil, pillow top mattress.

We woke up around 9:30 and the bass was still thriving off in the distance. We hummed and hawed about what to for a bit but soon emerged from the tent to have some breakfast and a coffee. Once satisfied we grabbed a beer and headed back to the fire to see who was still up, or arriving again for the second day of partying. Roomie was up fresh from a short nap and joined us for a morning beer around the fire as the sun shone over the mountains. The beer was amazingly tasty – as only a morning camping beer can be – but it was time to pack up and hit the road again, as we had another party in another town to go to. So we packed up the tent, all our gear, said our goodbyes and hit the road for our next adventure.

Tomorrow – The long weekend Part II – I Don’t Know How We Do It

The Single Girl

Saturday

I might have spoken too soon ...

I am sitting in front of my screen at 6pm on Saturday wondering how it is that I find myself to be this hung over. What happened you ask? Awesome happened …

A few weeks ago Awesome invited GB and I to a party that he was throwing for himself to celebrate a promotion. When the invite arrived (via Facebook - the greatest/worst thing ever) GB and I both responded that we might attend. On Monday while having drinks with Awesome he asked if I was coming to his party with big puppy dog eyes and told me of the crazy drunk fun that would ensue … how could we say no.

We arrived at the first bar and the gang was getting mobile to head to a karaoke bar. GB didn’t think much of this idea and wanted to stay at the first bar and join the gang later. I knew if we didn’t leave with the crowd we wouldn’t join them again so I convinced GB to come along. Along the way he repeatedly threatened to ditch me on the road with awesome. I managed to convince him to stay the course and walk in the rain and with the drunks he didn’t know with the promise of free beer. Because if there is one thing I have learned, drinking with Awesome is always an adventure. Don’t believe check this out, and this and oh yeah this one.

We finally arrived at the bar and sat down with the group which included Awesome’s best friend and his best work buddy (see stories above for reference). As soon as we sat down we noticed a large globe on the table that looked like an aluminum soccer ball with a tap on it. Then the glasses arrived. We were looking at five litres of draft served in a soccer ball. “Drink up” said Awesome’s best friend. And so it went, we would fill our glasses as often as we liked and people would continue to bring soccer balls to the table. After a while I thought it was time that I contributed to the fund so a bought a globe of beer. How much you ask? $35.00 for five litres of Stella Artois. It was magical.

Then the singing started. Our table was up no less than twenty times. Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Queen, Nirvana, The Beatles … you name it we sang it. It wasn’t magical like the cheap draft but it was something very special shared between 15 drunk people.

As the evening wore on it was becoming clear to me that if I was interested, Awesome could be mine for the evening. So I flirted with his best friend and best work buddy, because, well, why not! At the end of the evening – around 12:30 because I had to be at work this morning – I invited Awesome to come back to my home with GB and I. He looked at me skeptically and I let him know that I was fully aware of how drunk and incapably he currently was and I was inviting him over to sleep as we live much closer to the karaoke bar. He agreed with the logic and the three of us left our little piece of beer drinking and singing paradise.

We all pretty much pasted out right after walking through the door. My alarm went at around 7:00 this morning – that’s right, I went drinking when I knew I had to be up and ready to go out the door around 8:30 – and well … I broke my new year’s resolution.

Oh well.

I got up, got ready, had some vitamins and coffee then politely let Awesome know that my boss was coming to pick me up in about 20 minutes and I would really prefer it he wasn’t leaving as my boss was arriving. He concurred and headed off into the city in search of a Poweraid drink and his sobriety.

One more cup of coffee and some coverup and I was off to work with the boss and managed to hold it together for a 5 hour meeting on a Saturday morning, coffee in one hand and water in the other. After the meeting I asked another co-worker if he could tell that I was a little tired/a bit hungover and he said no I hid it well and really the rest of the staff was at a work event the night before so no one was 100%. Thanks mom and dad for the fabulous (or dangerous) genes that allow me to function after soccer balls of beer.

This experience has left me to wonder what is next. First their were fishbowls of vodka, then soccer balls of beer… can I look forward to … oh I am too hung to think of something witty … you fill in the blank and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
